Hey Steko and Tyler,
Thanks for stopping by. I've had so much encouragement from other European local chapters- it's really cool. Lots of work ahead, but it should be fun.

Tyler- many thanks for all of your help setting up the meeting- now any chance you might email me the photos you took- and the contact details of the folks in Edinburgh?

Keep your ear to the ground and eyes to the North too - I had some great meetings yesterday with several folks in Scotland (Edinburgh in particular). There is some definite interest in similar OSGeo representation there as well.

And for those who want to get in on the discussion, the UK OSGeo mailing list is at:

Cheerio!

Joanne,
we started talking about something similar here in Italy back in 2006, thanks to the GRASS Users Meetings that we have each year iw has been way easier to keep in contact (the grass-it mailing list dates back to before 2000).

It took us about 1 year to create our association (GFOSS.it) that later was also recognised as local OSGeo chapter. OSGeo was created more or less at the same time and we followed in detail all their steps, even though an international group is quite different from a country-based one (we're in fact language-based because we also have members from Switzerland). Now our association has ~100 members and a larger community of interested people focused on free software and data.

So, good luck with OSGeo UK!

Cheers,
Steko

PS It was a good thing archaeology was over-represented... :-)
