A nice short guide on how to start making your data open from Open Data Commons. This shows how simple it really is.

Jo, it is indeed very simple, BUT only if your data is actually yours. And many times this just isn’t the case, unfortunately: what happens when you fill up a database with factual data from many different sources (e.g. from archaeological literature)? And how do you deal with data licensing when lots of people contributed their own bits to a large dataset (like in almost any archaeological excavation)?
We had a workshop about this topic just two weeks ago in Genova (among the others, there was also a guy from Creative Commons). We are doing our best to define best practices and to highlight current problems with data sharing, but I realize that Italy has some peculiar features with regard to cultural heritage laws. I hope to come out with a report about this meeting very soon.
