Back in the land of the blogging

… and… relax!

We’ve just completed a really intense GIS project covering the entirety of the North-West of England- which we’ve been working on since Christmas. This week is the first time I have come up for air since before Christmas, and it’s been really great! I’ve been working on integrating the new free Ordnance Survey data into our nascent SDI, and updating our sites map with new features, and new data from some of our other offices. It might not look like much, but there’s lots of open source goodness in there! My colleague Lucian, who knows much more about PostgreSQL than I do has put in a function that automatically updates this map when a new project is added to our archives database. Next steps- more data integration- with our grey literature server, and sites from our two French offices, and adding the raster mapping from the Ordnance Survey to our SDI.

Anyhow, it’s great to be back in the land of blogging- I hope to do a post soon on how to deal with this great new data now it’s available, and also to recap on the great OKCON 2010 conference that I went to at the weekend!

Wow! I had no idea you had so much info posted, love that server, zeroed in on digs in Cottenham one right across from where I live (nr. Brenda Gautry Way, you mark as “S of Denmark Rd”). Also downloaded you OAeast flyer, sorry I cannot make it to Landbeach tomorrow, oh well! Et votre site français n’est pas mal non plus… Are you aware of Christophe Staf’s templiers.org, I helped him build this http://www.templiers.org/commanderies.php, he’s here on Facebook under his name. Cheers, A.

Hi Jo, the sites map looks slick, looks like OS has really been fully embraced by the unit. sadly i dont have the drive of work requirements keeping me up to speed with developments, and its not always that easy to keep my enthusiam up to do stuff at home, though i do try!
Hope the regional HLC went well, shame i didnt end up doing anything on that would have been nice to get back in touch with you, even Jamie lol! strage as it may seem i really do miss the unit, shame i had to leave.
Take care, hope to bump into you soon,
    Neil

    Thanks All!

@Neil- sorry we couldn’t get you more involved in the Regional HLC- in the end what we needed to do was quite simple, there was just an awful lot of data to work with! Would have been nice to catch up though- we must have a drink some time!

    Hi Jo,
Liked the map very nice interface & easy to use -
BFWM92 is the closest mapped project to my home! ACHR98 may have wandered slightly tho… :o )

My PhD is suffering due to lack of your intellectual input, we should chat soon!
